Verilife recently analyzed dispensary listing data from more than 600 US cities to find out which cities and states have the most marijuana dispensaries per capita.
Here’s what they found:
States with the Most Marijuana Dispensaries
Considering it was among one of the first states to legalize medicinal marijuana, it might not be too surprising that Oregon hosts the most marijuana dispensaries per capita. There are more than 660 dispensaries located throughout the state or 16.5 per 100,000 residents.
Coming in at No. 2 is Oklahoma. Even though Oklahoma’s medical marijuana law was recently passed in the summer of 2018, the state has already seen a boom in dispensaries. Oklahoma is home to the 2nd most dispensaries per capita, which equals about 15.6 dispensaries per 100,000 people. Montana comes in at a close 3rd with 15.1 dispensaries per 100,000 people followed by Colorado (14.1) and Alaska (12.7).
Legal marijuana has generated a large amount of tax revenue for these five states. In Colorado alone, tax revenue from marijuana generated more than $266 million in 2018 (or $4.8 million per 100,000 people). Washington was also home to substantial marijuana tax revenue with more than $319 million generated in 2018 (or $4.4 million per 100,000 people).
It’s interesting to note that while Oklahoma has the most marijuana dispensaries per capita, it has generated the least amount of tax revenue from cannabis out of all the states where marijuana is legal. The state is home to nearly 600 dispensaries but generated only $70,000 from marijuana in 2018. Marijuana tax revenue data was not available in Iowa or Texas and taxes were not collected in the remaining 16 states.
Cities with the Most Marijuana Dispensaries
After analyzing which states have the most marijuana dispensaries per capita, we decided to take a closer look and examine the top cities with the most marijuana dispensaries.
Considering they are the top two states with the most dispensaries, it makes sense that cities within Oklahoma and Oregon make up the bulk of the top 30 cities with the most dispensaries per capita. Nine Oklahoma cities and eight Oregon cities are listed within the top 30 rankings. However, it’s Missoula, Montana that’s home to the most dispensaries per capita with 18 marijuana dispensaries per 50,000 people. Medford, Oregon (17) and Pueblo, Colorado (16.6) rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, followed by Eugene, Oregon (16.1) and Denver, Colorado (14.9).
