RESiN: Where do you record?
Sapphire Road: Our first EP was recorded at several different places. Our song “Time Stood Still” was done in a professional studio while many of the others were done ourselves. We currently have been recording some new tracks with our good friend Ryan Mathis from R&R audio visual at his studio.
RESiN: How did you guys become a band?
Sapphire Road: Olivia was always passionate about music from when she was young. She was in a couple bands throughout the years. She finally branched out and colaberated with former guitar player Ryan Brennan and they began writing tunes and forming the band. Slowly but surely its all come together for us.
RESiN: How did you meet, How long have you been together?
Sapphire Road: The band was formed in 2009. There were a few years we slowed our pace but we got back on our feet. A lot of our connections came through our love for the ocean, surfing and mutual friends. We all love to surf and ended up crossing paths at different times, whether on the beach or different places throughout the years. Olivia and Mike started playing acoustic gigs together while Chris jumped in shortly after. She also played shows with Cameron at places like the Coach house. We all somehow joined forces to become what Sapphire Road is today.
RESiN: Sapphire Road where did the name come from?
Sapphire Road: The name came from when Olivia and Ryan Brennan first started the band. Ryans birth stone is a Sapphire while Olivias last name is Rohde. Kind of just came to them one day and they rolled with it.
RESiN: How many albums do you have?
Sapphire Road: Currently we have one our album “Time Stood Still”. Our second is on its way and we don’t plan on stopping there.
RESiN: How would you describe your own music?
Sapphire Road: We like to call ourselves dreamy surf rock. We have been compared to bands like Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies. We like to bring that surf/ dreamy vibe to our songs but also to be appealing to multiple crowds that are into different or more popular styles of music.
RESiN: How has your music evolved since you have been playing together?
Sapphire Road: Our style has evolved a lot. Our first album many of the songs are very mellow, songs you would put on and relax at the end of a hard day. Our new tunes we have picked up the pace and brought more excitement. We always try to not stray far from our original sound in writing new songs though.
RESiN: Do you have a record label if not, how did you put out the albums, any help with funding?
Sapphire Road: We currently don’t have a record label. We can see everyday that we are making steps towards that just being cautious and not rushing. A lot of the funding has come out of our own pockets but luckily we have come across good friends and people who have given us money from time to time to help with production costs like our good friend Daniel Kerpan.
RESiN: What are you currently working on?
Sapphire Road: We are currently working on our new album, but to be more specific our new single “Ride On”. We are in post production on it and have a music video in the works to follow shortly after. We are excited for it all to be complete we are getting close.
RESiN: Can you please explain how the song writing process, among the band works?
Sapphire Road: Our songwriting varies lately. Many of our tunes Olivia writes the lyrics and come up with a basic rhythm and the rest follows after. Sometimes we will just be hanging at our studio and come up with a cool chord sequence and build off that. We all add our own flare to them as Chris will throw a different spin on an old tune on drums or Cameron will always be adding new cool licks on the bass that keeps us headed in the right direction.
RESiN: Long term goals for Sapphire Road?
Sapphire Road: Our long term goal is to be touring with National acts and be sharing our love of music with a bigger audience. We have been playing some fun shows all over So Cal but its time to branch out to bigger and better things.
RESiN: If you could play any venue tonight…Where would it be and who would you have open for you?
Sapphire Road: Realistically we would probably like to play a festival like Coachella or Lollapalooza because of the variety of different tastes in the crowd. It would be rad to play with a band that we have crossed paths with like Cage the Elephant, the Pixies, Delta Spirit or Billy Idol. If we could go back in time we would love to play with bands that inspired us like the Mamas and the Papas and the greats like Ricky Nelson.
RESiN: What was your BEST show experience?
Sapphire Road: I think we would have to say the best show experience up till now is when we played House of Blues Anaheim. We had an great time premiering our music video for our song “Time Stood Still” while having tons of awesome people in the crowd. We are playing House of Blues San Diego in a week or so we hope to top it with that one!
RESiN: What was your WORST show experience?
Sapphire Road: Our worst show would probably have to be a venue we played in LA. We spent most the night waiting around then to find out we play last at like 1am. The place was practically empty and then we ended up playing for a couple friends. Then we had the long trek home after. Just was discouraging and felt like a waste. Olivia had a few to drink and was saying some interesting things into the mic and using the stage like a dance floor as if she was at the Hollywood Bowl so that was pretty entertaining haha.
RESiN: Any lessons that have been learned that you would like to share with young musicians?
Sapphire Road: To not get discouraged. If your dream is to be a great musician or singer don’t let anyone stop you. We have had our highs and lows since 2009. Discouraging shows, our relationships working under stress and the curve balls life throws at you will make you feel like you wanna give up but we have learned to keep pressing forward and we know its only up from here.
RESiN: Where can people find your Music?
Sapphire Road: You can find our music on iTunes, Spotify, Reverberation and Bandcamp but most importantly you can find everything in one place on our website at www.sapphireroadmusic.com
RESiN: One good story that comes from being on the road!
Sapphire Road: Probably the coolest thing a couple of us got to do was last year Olivia and Mike got invited to go backstage at Wrex the Halls in San Diego. Olivia has made friends with Billy Idol over the years and we got to hang with some of the biggest bands right now like Alt J, Billy Idol and Cage the Elephant. At the end of the night we were both on Cage the Elephants tour bus having some beers and playing them our original songs. They were all super rad guys and stoked on our tunes. It gave us encouragement to not stop till were playing shows with them.
RESiN: Anyone that you would like to thank for financial or emotional support?
Sapphire Road: We would like to thank our friend Daniel Kerpan for helping us with the finances oder our first round of EP’s. We would also like to thank all the local bars, restaurants and venues near our hometowns that support our music. By them letting us play acoustic covers and small gigs in our free time we can use some of the funds to keep the band moving forward.
