RESiN: What city were you born in?
Sydney Lauren: I was born in NYC! Growing up in New York exposed me to a lot of cool art, including music. When I got older, I was so excited to explore what it had to offer and the people keeping the energy alive.
RESiN: How old are you?
Sydney Lauren: 22 years young!
RESiN: How old were you when you realized you had musical talent and when did you decide that was the path to pursue?
Sydney Lauren: When I was younger, around the age of 9, I would dance around my room and sing loudly when I thought no one was listening. I was incredibly shy when I was younger. My grandparents had an antique piano in their home and whenever we would visit, I’d spend hours messing around at it. I begged my parents for lessons for years and finally at the age of 15 I started learning how to play the piano and guitar. As my passion grew louder and louder, it helped me break out of the quiet shell I was stuck in. If I wanted to go into music, I had to be more outgoing so I forced myself until it felt natural!
RESiN: Where do you call home right now?
Sydney Lauren: New York is home for me! The energy is contagious and there’s always something to see to inspire you. Plus, you can’t get a bagel like one here anywhere else 🙂
RESiN: What albums did you grow up listening to?
Sydney Lauren: Growing up the albums on repeat were anything James Taylor and Carole King. Their music helped me to start songwriting. I’m also huge fans of Christina Perri and Sara Bareilles so those were also at the top of my list!
RESiN: A Producer or musician that you want to collaborate with that you haven’t yet?
Sydney Lauren: If I’m gonna dream big, I’d love to work with any of the popular producers/DJs at the moment; Diplo, Zedd, etc. That would be really fun! Top of my bucket list is to work with Christina Perri, got to dream big or go home!
RESiN: Do you play any Instruments?
Sydney Lauren: I play guitar and piano, and sometimes dabble on the flute! The flute was the first instrument I ever played and how I was introduced to reading music and music theory. I played in my school band from 4th grade to 8th grade. I loved it but I didn’t want to join marching band and gave it up, still wishing I never stopped!
RESiN: How does the process of putting together a song for you go? Do you work with a band or is it more of a solo journey?
Sydney Lauren: If I’m writing solo, I usually start with a concept and a strong first/last chorus line. The rest usually writes itself. If I’m co-writing, I try and show up with a concept or line and take it from there. Co-writing sessions always tend to go in a direction on their own.
RESiN: What do you enjoy doing outside of music?
Sydney Lauren: Riding bikes with my family, hanging out with my friends! Doing anything that inspires me!
RESiN: Who are some of your top influences?
Sydney Lauren: My biggest influence is Christina Perri. I relate to the way she writes and her message as an artist.
I study artists I love to try and learn from what they’re doing in their careers. It gives me a lot of inspiration! My top inspirations are always changing.
RESiN: If you weren’t doing music as a career, what do you think you would be doing?
Sydney Lauren: If I weren’t chasing my dream as a singer songwriter, I’d probably be doing something in retail. My parents both work in retail and I most likely would have followed them.
RESiN: If you can hang with any fictional character, who and why?
Sydney Lauren: I would choose Kim Possible. Always thought it’d be fun to experience a day with her!
RESiN: If you can share some life wisdom you’ve learned thus far with the kids of today, what would it be?
Sydney Lauren: Stay true to yourself! There are so many people who want to bring you down and tell you you’re not good enough but if you believe in yourself and do what you love, you’ll get somewhere.
RESiN: What was your BEST show experience?
Sydney Lauren: I was once playing a show outside and someone who had worked at the venue came up to me and asked where one can find my music. Someone who lived across the street had called because they heard me playing and enjoyed it and wanted to find out more about me. I thought she was coming to tell me I was playing too loud! It’s the little things that can make your night!
RESiN: Do you have a venue or event that is on your career to-do list?
Sydney Lauren: Sell out Madison Square Garden. Ever since I was young, attending Jingle Balls, it’s been my dream to perform there!
RESiN: Anything that you would like to promote? Web-sites, Social Pages, and or Shows you may have in the near future?
